The king was the absolute ruler over his nation and he closely controlled all the peoples and all the land - except for this one large hill. There was a magician living at the top of this hill and whenever anyone tried to climb up the hill the magician conjured up a bunch of large yellow fingers that would reach down, grab the insurgents and throw them back to the bottom.
The king became increasingly frustrated that he could not control this hill and this magician, so he devised a plan: He would take all of the knights he could collect from all the surrounding kingdoms and make a mass assault on the hill. He figured there would be too many knights for the yellow fingers to get them all and some would manage to get through and depose the magician.
Unhappily, as more knights approached the hill, there appeared more fingers so, no matter how many knights charged they all got thrown back to the bottom of the hill.
The king had one further plan. There were more men-at-arms than there were knights, so he sent all the men-at-arms up the hill in one massive assault. But once again, more yellow fingers appeared and all got thrown back to the bottom. The king was ready to give up when the Pages of the Court - just a few young boys - asked if they could try. The king laughed and thought the foolishness of youth had made them overconfident - but he had run out of ideas so he gave them permission to try.
To his amazement, the young boys were able to dodge all of the yellow fingers and wind their way through to the top of the hill where they easily captured the magician. All of which goes to prove that you should let your Pages do the walking through the yellow fingers.
I noticed recently that few people appear to remember phone numbers anymore. Everything is stored electronically and is dialled automatically so we rarely actually have to know anyone’s number. I can’t even remember my own mobile phone number. Am I the only one?
I still have a drawer full of telephone directories but I can’t remember the last time I used one. I find it easier to go ‘on line’. Are the Yellow Pages becoming redundant? It’s not that we have stopped using the printed word entirely because I understand that sales of books are still generally doing OK. But we are far more attached to the screen (more correctly, various kinds of screen!) than we are to paper and in some situations that can be helpful. But not always.
The Bible has for many years been the bestselling book — and some would say the least read! The apostle Paul wrote: ‘All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is tight.’ (2 Timothy 3:16 New Living Translation)
My guess is that we need that kind of help, guidance and instruction as much now as ever we did. The only thing that stops us is that we have to make the effort to take up the book and read it. Now that’s a novel idea!
p.s. Of course you can even get an electronic version of the Bible if you are that addicted to the small screen.
