5th - 9th October - Jesus is Enough (Orbit Week 1)

Introduction
Jesus is not simply one more priority to fit into life. In Colossians 1, Paul lifts our eyes to the one who holds creation together and has made peace with us through his cross. This week, begin with wonder before you rush to application. As you read, ask where you have been trying to hold everything together yourself—and what it would mean to trust Jesus as your true centre.
Day 1: A Gospel That Bears Fruit
Scripture
Read Colossians 1:1–8.

Thought for the Day
Paul begins with gratitude. Even from a distance, he can see that the gospel has taken root in Colossae and is bearing fruit. That is what happens when Jesus moves from being an idea we agree with to the centre of the life we actually live. Hope rises, faith becomes active and love starts to show up in ordinary places.

The gospel is not a private possession or a Sunday add-on. It is good news that grows. It reshapes how we see people, how we carry pressure and how we use the opportunities in front of us. As we begin this series, ask whether Jesus is simply present somewhere in your life, or whether he is becoming the centre from which everything else grows.

Reflection
• Where can you see the gospel bearing fruit in your life?
• What area of your life needs to be brought back into orbit around Jesus?
• Who might be encouraged by a practical act of love this week?

Prayer
Jesus, thank you for the hope of the gospel. Let it take deeper root in me and bear fruit through the way I live, love and serve. Re-centre my life around you. Amen.
Day 2: Strength for the Real World
Scripture
Read Colossians 1:9–14.

Thought for the Day
Paul prays not for an easier life, but for people to know God’s will, live wisely and be strengthened to keep going. Jesus at the centre gives us a way to live faithfully in the middle of real life, not a way to avoid it.

Notice the kind of strength Paul describes: endurance, patience and joyful gratitude. This is not self-made resilience. It comes from the Father who has rescued us from darkness and brought us into the kingdom of his Son. You do not have to hold your life together by yourself.

Reflection
• Where do you need wisdom rather than a quick fix?
• What would patient endurance look like in one current pressure?
• What can you thank God for today?

Prayer
Father, fill me with wisdom and strengthen me for today. Help me to live in a way that reflects your goodness, even when life is demanding. Thank you that I belong in the kingdom of your Son. Amen.
Day 3: The Centre of Everything
Scripture
Read Colossians 1:15–20.

Thought for the Day
Here is the breathtaking centre of the letter: Jesus is the image of the invisible God, before all things, the one through whom all things were created and the one in whom all things hold together. Paul does not present Jesus as a helpful addition to an already busy life. He presents him as the centre of reality itself.

That changes our question. Instead of asking, “How can Jesus help me keep everything together?” we ask, “What needs to find its proper place around him?” Work, family, ambition, anxiety and plans matter, but none can carry the weight of being your centre. Jesus can.

Reflection
• What has been carrying too much weight in your life?
• How does Jesus being before all things change the way you see your concerns?
• What would it mean to place one specific concern in his hands today?

Prayer
Jesus, you are before all things and in you all things hold together. Forgive me for asking lesser things to carry the weight only you can bear. Take your rightful place at the centre of my life. Amen.
Day 4: Brought Near
Scripture
Read Colossians 1:21–23.

Thought for the Day
The Jesus who holds creation together also makes peace through his cross. Paul moves from the vastness of the universe to the nearness of our own hearts: once alienated, now reconciled. Christian faith begins not with our attempt to reach God, but with God’s loving action in Christ to bring us near. We do not re-centre life around Jesus to earn his acceptance.

We do it because he has welcomed us by grace. When shame or failure tells you to pull away, remember the hope held out in this passage. Stay grounded in the gospel rather than in what your worst day says about you.

Reflection
• Where are you tempted to think you must earn God’s welcome?
• How does reconciliation change the way you face shame?
• What helps you remain grounded in the hope of the gospel?

Prayer
Jesus, thank you for making peace through your cross and bringing me near to God. Help me to stand secure in your grace and keep trusting the hope of the gospel. Amen.
Day 5: Christ in You
Scripture
Read Colossians 1:24–29.

Thought for the Day
Paul’s ministry has one great aim: to present everyone fully mature in Christ. The mystery he announces is wonderfully personal: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Jesus is not only someone we admire from a distance. He is at work among and within his people.

Growth will involve effort, perseverance and sometimes suffering, but it is not driven by willpower alone. Paul works hard with the energy Christ powerfully works in him. Jesus holds the universe together and also meets us in the everyday work of becoming more like him.

Reflection
• What might change if you trusted that Christ is at work in you?
• Where do you need his strength rather than more self-effort?
• Whom could you encourage in their walk with Jesus?

Prayer
Jesus, thank you that you are my hope of glory. Keep forming me into your likeness, and give me strength that comes from you rather than only from myself. Amen.

12th - 16th October - Don't Drift (Orbit Week 2)

Introduction
Drift often happens quietly. We may still speak about Jesus while looking elsewhere for security, wisdom or a sense of being enough. Building on the Sunday message, these readings take us through Colossians 2: Paul calls us to stay rooted in Christ, recognise hollow substitutes and let go of religion that looks impressive but cannot change the heart. Notice what competes for your trust, then take one practical step back towards Jesus.
Day 1: Steady in Truth
Scripture
Read Colossians 2:1–5.

Thought for the Day
Paul wants the church to be encouraged in heart, united in love and confident in Christ. He knows that people do not usually drift from Jesus in one dramatic decision. More often, they are gradually persuaded by voices that sound impressive but quietly move Christ away from the centre.

The answer is not to fear every question or idea. It is deeper confidence in Jesus. In him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. When life feels confusing, we do not have to chase every new promise of certainty. We can stay connected to Christ and to one another.
Reflection
• Which voices most shape your thinking?
• Where do you need encouragement or connection with other Christians?
• What would growing confidence in Christ look like this week?

Prayer
Jesus, keep my heart encouraged and my life rooted in you. Give me wisdom to recognise what draws me away from you, and help me stay close to your people. Amen.
Day 2: Keep Walking
Scripture
Read Colossians 2:6-7

Thought for the Day
Paul’s instruction is direct: just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him. Faith begins with Jesus and keeps going with Jesus. We do not start by grace and then graduate to self-reliance or constant spiritual novelty.

The images are strong: rooted, built up, strengthened and overflowing with thankfulness. Roots grow slowly and mostly out of sight. A steady life in Christ is often formed through repeated choices: praying honestly, opening Scripture, gathering with others and giving thanks. These practices do not replace Jesus; they help us keep walking in him.

Reflection
• What simple practice helps you stay rooted in Jesus?
• Where are you relying on yourself rather than continuing in Christ?
• What can you thank God for before anything changes?

Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me keep walking in you. Root me deeply, build me steadily and make gratitude a more natural response in my life. Amen.
Day 3: Jesus is Enough
Scripture
Read Colossians 2:8-15

Thought for the Day
Paul warns against ideas that promise fullness but are empty at their centre. The good news is not that we need to keep adding spiritual layers to become complete. In Christ, the fullness of God lives, and in Christ we have been brought to fullness.

Jesus has dealt with sin, the record of our debt and hostile powers through the cross. Our security does not rest on how impressive or disciplined we feel today. It rests on what Christ has done. When something else claims it can finally make you whole, bring that claim back to Jesus.

Reflection
• Where do you look for a sense of fullness apart from Jesus?
• Which part of Christ’s work do you need to remember today?
• How could his sufficiency shape a decision you face this week?

Prayer
Jesus, thank you that you are enough. When I look for security in lesser things, draw me back to what you have done. Help me live from the fullness you have given me. Amen.
Day 4: Hold on to the Head
Scripture
Read Colossians 2:16-19

Thought for the Day
Paul addresses pressure to measure faith by religious rules, spiritual experiences or someone else’s approval. These can look convincing, but they become dangerous when they pull our attention away from Christ. The central question is not whether we appear spiritual, but whether we are holding firmly to Jesus.

Christ is the head of the body. Growth comes through connection to him, not comparison with others. You do not have to prove your worth through performance or extraordinary experiences. Keep hold of Jesus and allow him to grow you alongside his people.

Reflection
• Where do you feel judged or compared in your faith?
• Have any expectations become more important than Jesus himself?
• How can you hold on to Christ today?el?

Prayer
Jesus, free me from comparison and the need to prove myself. Keep me connected to you, the head of your church, and help me grow in the life you give. Amen.
Day 5: What Really Changes Us
Scripture
Read Colossians 2:20-23

Thought for the Day
Rules can look wise and offer the satisfaction of feeling in control. But Paul is clear: self-made religion cannot restrain our desires or transform the human heart. We cannot change simply by becoming stricter with ourselves.

This is not an excuse for careless living. It is an invitation to be honest about the limits of behaviour management. Lasting change flows from belonging to Jesus. Ask not only, “What do I need to stop?” but also, “Where do I need to trust Christ more deeply?” Next week we will see what this new life looks like.

Reflection
• Where have you confused outward control with inward change?
• What rule or habit do you rely on to feel spiritually secure?
• What would trusting Jesus for real change look like?

Prayer
Father, forgive me when I rely on rules and self-effort instead of Jesus. Change me from the inside out and teach me to live in the freedom he gives. Amen.
